Firefighters have long recognized that the best way to deal with fires and the destruction and pain that they cause is to prevent fires from happening in the first place. Firefighters have
taken a number of approaches to accomplish this, including promoting fire safe building design and construction, encouraging the inclusion of detection and extinguishing systems in buildings
and by educating and encouraging people to adopt behavior that lessens the chances of fires beginning and protects them when fires do occur.
The Office of the State Fire Commissioner attempts to help people adopt fire safe behavior by providing
Prevention and Education Programs.
